Lexus LF-Ch Shows the Gold in Frankfurt

We're not really sure what Lexus was thinking, introducing the Lexus LF-Ch full hybrid concept in all-gold. It seems a little counter-intuitive to paint what is supposed to be a modest five-door in a gaudy color.

Perhaps they are trying to market the vehicle exclusively to Russian and Middle Eastern markets, where those colors are occasionally sought after.

Obviously, it would be unfair to judge the car on color alone. It does actually look very cool, maintaining a distinctly Japanese look. It has an interesting front fascia, and a body with sharp lines. As a concept, the back makes for a very interesting look, but this would clearly be toned down if it were brought to market. Inside, it features a more muted look, with leather and aluminum throughout.

The car uses a 2.4-liter, 147 horsepower engine, and a 40hp electric motor. Steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters offer an element of control over the six-speed automatic transmission.

Audi R8 e-Tron Officially Unveiled with 4,500Nm of Torque

It's official. The Audi R8 e-Tron Concept has finally been unveiled and we have plenty of details on the powertrain and other information. With the other two premium-segment Germans presenting their own interpretation of the electric super car, Audi would not be left behind.

Ingolstadt's ace up the sleeve is this all-electric R8 which is set to take on anything from Tesla or any other ‘green' supercar. There are no sneezing V10 engines here and certainly no big exhaust pipes at the rear. Instead the e-Tron has four electric motors, one for each wheel, driving up to 70% of power to the rear wheels. They offer a total system output of 230kW (313hp) and maximum torque of 4,500Nm. We have triple-checked and yes, it says 4,500Nm (3,319.03 lb-ft)! These figures translate to a 0 - 100km/h time of 4.8 seconds, a top speed of 200km/h and a range of about 248km on full lithium-ion power.

Recharging the 213kg battery pack at the back to full capacity requires six to eight hours on a normal 220V outlet while a 400V plug will do the job in about two and a half hours.

As far as its looks, the e-Tron's appearance is fronted by the slit-like LED headlights which are complimented by the wide single-frame grille and additional air intakes. It is 4.2m long, 1.9m wide and 1.23m high. Body mass is said to be 1.6 tons thanks to the liberal use of space frame aluminium technology and reinforced plastic for the body.

Now we wait and see which of the Germans puts their electric supercar first on the road and how close they stay to their concept.

Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept Revealed Ahead of Tokyo Debut

Subaru has released photos and details of their upcoming design study in advance of the Tokyo Motor Show. The Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept will combine several of the company's latest technologies in one vehicle.

The car is powered by the next-generation of Subaru's engine line, a direct-injection, turbo-charged 2.0-liter, horizontally opposed engine. The petrol engine is mated to two electric motors, including a 10 kW unit at the front and a 20 kW unit in back. The rear motor is used for powering the vehicle when the engine is not needed, while the front motor runs the electrics. The front motor also helps pull the car when going uphill.

The two motors are powered by a Lithium-Ion battery.

Additionally, Subaru is using a Lineartronic Contiuously Variable Transmission, and their signature all-wheel drive. Regenerative braking, and start/stop, have been added to increase efficiency.

The automaker also installed their "EyeSight" system, which uses "stereo camera technology" to assist in avoiding collisions. Presumably, the camera, or cameras, forms a three-dimensional image that the system is capable of analyzing.

With gullwing doors, ventilated leather seats, and a completely flat floor, the Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept is sure to be a hit when it is introduced on 21 October in Tokyo.

Rumors: BMW Vision ED Concept Slated for 2012 as M1 Green Drive

A new report has surfaced indicating that BMW will build a production version of the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept.

Set to revive the legendary M1 name, the fuel efficient supercar will reportedly adopt the concept's aggressive styling and advanced powertrain. Inside, the car will feature a three-dimensional head-up display, a "digital dash" and a two-plus-two seating arrangement.

Like the VED concept, the M1 will be powered by a three-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and an electric motor. While details are limited, the combined output is expected to be more than 350 bhp and 800 Nm of torque. If these figures are correct, the M1 will likely accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than five seconds, before hitting an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

According to an Auto Express source, the engine is almost production ready and some of the hybrid components will be taken from the X6 ActiveHybrid.

If BMW is planning on production, look for a launch in 2012.

Lamborghini Estoque Concept Spotted in Germany

The Lamborghini Estoque Concept was recently seen on the streets of Cologne, Germany. Spotted without license plates, the car may have been the subject of a photo shoot. Although the circumstances around the spotting are unknown, it seems clear that the sports car has not yet been put to bed.

Lambo's four-door concept was first introduced last October during the Paris Motor Show. Soon after, the front/mid-engined car was rumored to be axed, due to the economic crisis.

Back in March, Lamborghini responded to the rumors by saying the vehicle had not been cancelled, but, "No decision has been made to produce the Estoque." The company has said that a four-door would fit well with their current product line-up.

Big enough to fit four adults with enough room for a few golf bags, the Lamborghini Estoque Concept is meant to fit a class of cars called "super sports sedans" such as the Aston Martin Rapide, Porsche Panamera and Bugatti 16 C Galibier.

Tokyo Preview: Toyota FT-86 Concept

Toyota announced today the FT-86 Concept, a new compact rear-wheel-drive sports car that will be showcased at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show. The FT-86 (”86″ pronounced “hachi roku”) follows the same design lines as the FT-HS Concept and promises to provide driving joy and excitement.

According to the manufacturer, the compact design of the concept gives the drivers a better control, while body’s lightness and low center of gravity allow racecar-like handling. Under the hood we find a 2-liter boxer engine but Toyota did not release any detailed regarding the power of the vehicle. The Flash Red body color also comes with something new: it contains hints of blue. Inside we find a brand new design which “expresses modern feel with minimal coverage of the highly refined structural components evoking enthusiasm for cruising”. Regarding the dimensions of the car, this measures 4,160 mm in length, has a width of 1,760 mm, a height of 1,260 mm and a wheelbase seating which measures 2,570 mm. Photo gallery after the jump!

Press release:

“TMC seeks to develop the ultimate earth-conscious environmentally-considerate vehicle with a focus on hybrid technologies without losing sight of the appeal of cars themselves or the joy of driving.

Over the past several years, the need has been rising for motor vehicles that take into consideration global warming and other environmental issues, while there has also been concern that there have been too few new sports cars that make the heart beat faster and that the time is right for a new generation of sports cars. In response to these needs, TMC has developed the FT-86 Concept, a sports car equipped with a 2,000cc, horizontally opposed, four-cylinder, naturally-aspirated gasoline engine that evokes the joy of driving a car and the pleasure of vehicle ownership.

As the name “Future Toyota 86 Concept” implies, the FT-86 Concept, which will be exhibited at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, is a new 86 Toyota with a flash red finish. It is a compact, rear-wheel drive sports concept car that embodies speed and the excitement of driving that give cars their appeal as well as environmental performance.

A Toyota Sports Car for a New Era when the Driver Plays the Main Role

The FT-86 Concept is 4,160mm long, 1,760mm wide, and 1,260mm high with a wheelbase of 2,570mm, giving it a compact feeling that is easy for the driver to handle while able to accommodate four occupants. In addition to being light and having a low center of gravity, the FT-86 Concept boasts the handling of a racing car as well as a 6-speed manual transmission and ADVICS brakes.

The stylish concept captures the heart with the “functional utility” of its highly-refined body. It is the creation of Toyota Europe Design Development known as ED2, which has established body lines that take into consideration a low center of gravity and aerodynamics. The interior is distinctive, featuring an instrument panel with a gray and white base, gauges with red neon lights and digital displays, and a navigation system. In addition, a zipper that evokes an image of interior lapping with minimal covering of a highly-refined body presents a striking display.

It is necessary to create a vehicle in which the driver plays the main role in order to have as many people as possible experience the joy of driving.

The FT-86 Concept is neither an electric vehicle nor a hybrid vehicle, but is a sports model with a gasoline engine developed to convey the essential appeal of automobiles in a new era. It is a must-see concept car that expresses TMC’s desire to once again create a Toyota sports car.”

Rolls-Royce To Unveil 200EX At Geneva Motor Show

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will unveil its latest experimental car, called 200EX, at the Geneva Motor Show on 3 March 2009. The car will be revealed by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ Chairman, Ian Robertson, at a press conference at 1.45pm CET. 200EX is a design study for a contemporary four-door saloon and shows the direction for RR4, a new model series from Rolls-Royce due for production in 2010.

Experimental models have always played a significant role in the history of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, from the first – 1EX, built in 1919 – to the most recent – 101EX, built in 2006. Unlike a concept car, the experimental models developed by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars have always been fully functioning vehicles, residing in a tangible world of wood, leather and metals rather than clay and foam. EX cars offer designers and engineers the opportunity for real-world innovation and have been used to showcase new components and engineering techniques as well as exterior and interior designs.

100EX was the first experimental car unveiled after Rolls-Royce Motor Cars was relaunched under BMW Group ownership in 2003. Revealed at the Geneva motor show in 2004, the two-door, four-seat convertible was built to mark 100 years of Rolls-Royce motor car design and engineering. Just two years later, 101EX was presented, which explored modern coupé design. Both of these cars inspired production models that not only closely resemble their EX progenitors but have also redefined luxury motoring in the modern age.

Following on from this success, the same group of designers and engineers has created 200EX, itself pointing the way to RR4, a new Rolls-Royce model scheduled for production in 2010. The brief for 200EX? To create a modern, lithe and dynamic Rolls-Royce that bears all the hallmarks of the great cars that have gone before it: effortless performance, unparalleled refinement, exquisite quality and confident design.

200EX has a dynamic edge to its styling and is noticeably less formal than previous models. Its size, style and expression broaden the appeal of the car, making it more appropriate for a wider range of circumstances. “200EX is a touring saloon with more than a little panache and perhaps more bravado than one might have expected from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars,” says Cameron. “What you see is a modern car that is immediately recognisable as a true Rolls-Royce, even from angles that obscure the grille and Spirit of Ecstasy. Design elements such as the elevated prow, long bonnet, short front overhang, sharply raked A-pillar and elegant tail give 200EX an air of informal presence – powerful but unobtrusive.”

The exterior design is dominated by large, uninterrupted surfaces, while finely sculptured horizontal lines add definition and geometric precision. In combination, the upward-sweeping sill line and low-cut roof create a powerful profile. The tapered rear is enhanced by powerful shoulders and flanks that draw in sharply, narrowing as they flow from the rear wings to the tail-lights.

The rear-hinged coach doors give the car a natural presence and sense of theatre. Revived in 2003 on the Phantom, this signature feature lends added functionality and style to the design. Opening through a generous 83 degrees, the coach doors offer the widest rear access in the car industry as well as providing the warmest of welcomes to those about to step inside.

At the front, a pair of LED headlamps flank the latest evolution of the world’s most famous grille. “We wanted this to be less reminiscent of the traditional ‘Parthenon’ style and more like a jet intake,” says Ian Cameron. The sides of the intake have been curved inwards and the vanes set back into the opening. It’s a more dynamic form that moves on from the design first seen on the Phantom Drophead Coupé.

The exterior of 200EX is finished in Darkest Tungsten, which contrasts with the silver satin finish applied to the bonnet and A-pillar. Seven-spoke, 20-inch wheels complete the visual impact of the exterior.

Within 200EX, Interior Designer Alan Sheppard has accomplished a contemporary atmosphere, incorporating the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars principles of fine materials and peerless comfort. The space is filled with natural light, which brings in a real sense of the outside world. However, substantial doors and a high shoulder line ensure that occupants feel cosseted and protected. In the rear, the intimate ambience of the lounge seat is emphasised by its position behind the C-pillar, heightening the sense of privacy.

Naturally, the finest materials have been used. Elegant, frosted lamps and chrome door handles feature, while details include traditional violin key switches, eyeball air vents, opaque dials and refined instrumentation.

“As with any Rolls-Royce, detail is crucial,” says Alan Sheppard. “We want the lasting impression for owners to be that their car was made just for them by someone skilled and caring.”

The dashboard has been kept deliberately clear; it is spacious in its design and has an intuitive layout. The controls are neatly sculptured, with more important functions emphasised by accents of chrome. The soft light of the instrument panel glows through the familiar black-rimmed steering wheel, which itself incorporates a number of violin keys as well as an ergonomic roller-ball control.

The interior of 200EX is finished in supple, natural grain Crème Light leather, with Cornsilk carpets and cashmere blend headliner. The featured wood veneer is Santos Palissander, chosen for its contemporary look and striking grain.

“200EX is a modern execution of timeless Rolls-Royce elegance, breaking with some areas of tradition but retaining the core values that make our marque unique,” says Chief Executive Officer Tom Purves. “We expect the more informal, agile design to broaden the appeal of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, attracting people who appreciate its fusion of refinement, new technology and contemporary style.”
